Port Salerno is a census-designated place (CDP) in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,091 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.0 square miles of which 3.6 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles (9.95%) is water.
 
In the 1920s, a small settlement named ‘Salerno’ was created in the southern shores of St. Lucie river inlet because the main settlers were emigrants from the Italian city of Salerno. After World War II, the area increased in population and importance, with many people from the northeastern United States moving to Florida. In 1960, the name was changed to Port Salerno, in order to differentiate it from that of the Italian city.
In the 1980s, the "Chastain Campus" of the Indian River State College was created. Port Salerno is known for the "World Fishing Tournaments", based on the yacht port. Not just the best Seafood is available here but hundreds of awesome vendors to shop, great live music and tons of stuff for the kids are main attractions in port Salerno. Freshly available sea food is served to the guests and tourists.
 
According to the census of 2000, there were 10,141 people, 4,466 households, and 2,862 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,803.2 people per square mile. There were 5,126 housing units at an average density of 1,416.9/sq mile.
 
The racial distribution of the CDP was 88.50% white, 6.95% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 2.27% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. There were 4,466 households in the town. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,948. About 7.0% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line.
 
Port Salerno is an unincorporated town located in Martin County, governed by County Commissioners. Martin County is divided into five districts. The Martin County Community Development Board, along with a committed group of loyal citizens, has been operational in creating real improvement for Port Salerno. Annually sea food festival is arranged for the residents and other community with fresh seafood, live entertainment, nautical vendors, family rides & entertainment! Memorial Park in Stuart Florida provides recreational facilities to the families and kids. Port Salerno water front district is a fun area on Manatee pocket with fresh seafood, the arts, water sports and a little bit of Key West on the Treasure Coast. Every year events are organized for water featuring and provides the perfect destination for wildlife tour, marine views, restaurant seafood experience etc. People are drawn here by the shopping, restaurant views and waterfront lifestyle.
Many of the planned improvements have been implemented since 2000, and many have not. Many local residents are concerned about the historic fishing village in case of over-development. Port Salerno has been able to retain its waterfront charm as well as to look forward to further improvements in the future.
