Tamarac

Developed by Ken Behring in the early 1960s, Tamarac is an active adult community consisting of two-bedroom maintenance free houses. Spread over a total area of 12.08 square miles, Tamarac had around 33,000 households with about 14% of them vacant. The estimated population of this busy town is about 65,200 as of 2016.

This township has always seen a flurry of construction activity right since the commencement of its development in the early 1960s. Tamarac Lakes Section One and Two were among the earliest developed localities somewhere around 1963. The development of Tamarac Lakes North and the Boulevards Four came next. The last two areas were part of an orange grove at the time of its development.

This area is famous as a bedroom community. Hence, you would mostly find flats and apartments instead of the individual bungalows. The city leaders allowed Fort Lauderdale to take over the commercial pockets as Tamarac intended to maintain the two-bedroom community formula. This proved to be a drain on its resources. In the late 1970s, it de-annexed certain pockets that went along with Behring’s idea.

Behring decided to build as many two-bedroom apartments as possible and hence extended the boundaries of the city towards the southern part. Today, the boundaries extend beyond Commercial Boulevard right up to Northern 16 Avenue. The Pinellas park are also saw development around the same time. More than 96% of the town’s area comprises of land with water bodies accounting for just around 0.46 square miles.
Even today, the developers are maintaining the same formula of building two bedroo

m apartments in this city. The city has a mixed-race population with 67.2% comprising of white people of Caucasian and Hispanic lineage. You have a decent proportion of Jamaicans living in this city as well. One can call this town as one of the best planned towns in Broward County in Florida.
